My name’s Beatriz Batista, and I’ve started this space to explore some questions that have been bouncing around in my mind about healthcare: what truly makes it meaningful, and where we might be headed next.
My journey into healthcare began with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Science here in the UK, and now working in the NHS’s cardiac department. Before that, I volunteered with dementia patients, shadowed surgeons in the operating theatre, and learned from both patients and professionals along the way.
Being part of the NHS, not just observing but actively working in the system, made me realize that healthcare is about so much more than treatment alone. It’s about the systems that support it, the way people communicate, the gaps and pressure points, and the unexpected human moments that can’t always be found in a textbook. I found myself more and more curious about the “why” and “how” behind healthcare. What’s working, what isn’t, and how things might be done differently. I know, big questions!
Right now, I’m preparing for a medical volunteering project in Sri Lanka, starting on the 6th of June 2025, where I’ll be learning about healthcare in a completely different setting. I wanted a place to write, reflect, and share not just what I see, but what I feel and think about along the way. This blog will be that space.
Whether I’m writing from a hospital in the UK or a clinic in Sri Lanka, I’ll be sharing stories, lessons, and ideas that matter to me. From everyday patient care to the bigger picture of global health.
If you’re reading this, thank you for stopping by. Whether you’re interested in volunteering, healthcare careers, or simply just curious about someone else’s journey, I hope you find something here that sparks your interest.
Let’s see where this takes us.
